The Fruit Crate<\/b><\/p>\n

Midway between a cage and a dungeon the French language has <\/span>le cageot<\/span><\/i>, the crate, a simple little box made to carry those sensitive fruits which with the least bit of suffocation are certain to have a bout of sickness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Made so that when you\u2019re done with it it can be broken effortlessly, it\u2019s destiny holds no second use. Therefore, its lifetime is even shorter than those of the easily bruised goods it contains. <\/span><\/p>\n

On every street corner leading to the market gleam the splinters of unassuming white wood. \u00a0Still brand new, and a little stunned to be so clumsily discarded in the gutter without a single hope of being reclaimed, this object is all the more likeable \u2013 the kind of thing on the fate of which it does not do to dwell on too long. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\nLe Cageot<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0A tous les coins de rues qui aboutissent aux halles, il luit alors de l’\u00e9clat sans vanit\u00e9 du bois blanc. Tout neuf encore, et l\u00e9g\u00e8rement ahuri d’\u00eatre dans une pose maladroite \u00e0 la voirie jet\u00e9 sans retour, cet objet est en somme des plus sympathiques – sur le sort duquel il convient toutefois de ne s’appesantir longuement.<\/span><\/p>\n
